Cambodia Underscores ASEAN Youth’s Role In Development And Peace

PHNOM PENH: ASEAN youth have been playing a crucial role in contributing to socio-cultural development and regional peace and development. The Chair of the Senior Officials Committee for the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (SOCA), Dr. Dy Khamboly, made this remarks at the 32nd Meeting of the Senior Officials Committee for the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (32nd SOCA Meeting) hosted by Cambodia on Tuesday (29 March) via videoconference. SOCA Leaders from the ten ASEAN Member States and Chairs of the Sectoral Bodies under the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) attended the meeting.

“I would like to take this opportunity to call upon SOCA Leaders to kindly support the ‘ASEAN Leaders’ Statement on the Year of ASEAN Youth 2022.’ During this milestone year, ASEAN will focus on fostering 21st century skills and digital skills, and the institutionalization of youth engagement mechanisms, guided by the ASEAN Work Plan on Youth 2021-2025,” said SOCA Chair, Dr. Dy Khamboly, in his opening remarks.

He continued to say that safe school reopening, recovery and resilience both during and post-Covid-19 will be crucial. Under the initiative of the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Education (SOM-ED), Cambodia in collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat and the UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (UNICEF EAPRO), an outcome document entitled “Reopen, Recover and Resilience in Education: Guidelines for ASEAN Countries” will be launched at the 27th ASCC Council Meeting. Dr. Dy Khamboly said It will provide evidence-based strategies that are not only relevant in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, but also to future pandemics and other emerging challenges to education.

He also took the opportunity to reiterate Cambodia’s commitment to cooperating with all ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat to successfully implement all past and present initiatives, as well as to achieve the priorities and the objectives of ASCC Blueprint 2025.

The 32nd SOCA Meeting focused on three important agendas, including matters arising from the 31st SOCA and 26th ASCC Council and Relevant ASEAN Meetings, Cambodia’s 2022 ASEAN Chairmanship and Outcome Documents for Consideration of ASEAN Leaders at the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits, and Preparation for 27th ASCC Council Meeting.

Tuesday marked the second day of the 32nd SOCA Meeting of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council. On Wednesday, there will be the 27th Meeting of the ASCC Council, during which participants will consider and adopt the Draft Report of the ASCC Council to the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits.
